great beauty and interest nearby. A car is a must to visit the
great towns of Alicante and Murcia. Murcia is 45 minutes away
with its cathedral, casino, museum, art galleries and shops,
local markets and bullfighting attractions may be found. Alicante
is also only 40 minutes away with excellent shopping, markets
as well as a castle, churches and art galleries. There are also
historic towns of Elche and Orihuela with their collection of
fine sights from their Moorish past, which blend perfectly into
the surrounding countryside with palm trees and fertile farmland.

Torrevieja is not geared to the foreign tourist market and
has few hotels. Many of those who holiday here are Spanish,
owners of a large proportion of the apartments in the town
itself. This dependency on Spanish holidaymakers has a beneficial
effect in keeping prices low. They wouldn’t stand for paying
the sort of prices foreign residents have to pay in places
like Marbella and Fuengirola. The 1 kilometre pedestrian area
along the seafront is dotted with cafés, bars and restaurants,
where even in December and January it is still possible to
take refreshment al fresco. The old town with its attractive
Marina, port and nautical club has a warm and welcoming ambience
and will appeal to those who look for a relaxing pace of life
in true Spanish style.
Situated
just a couple of minutes drive from Highway 332 or the A7,
which are the main roads to lead you to the destination of
your choice, the Orihuela Costa has something for everyone.
The nearby Mar Menor is often called 'the biggest natural
leisure pool in the world', a natural maritime arena with
its numerous sailing and canoeing schools and diving clubs.
One of the most varied and best preserved underwater nature
reserves in the Mediterranean is also to be found here off
the Islas Hormigas, where the beautiful limpid waters have
been declared a Marine Reserve. Boat trips can be arranged.
The large theme park, Terra Mitica at Benidorm is just over
an hours drive.
